Back to knitting

I haven't done much knitting during November since writing took up most of my free time, but now that the Nanowrimo challenge is over I went back to it. I've started a lace shawl (again) with the twig pattern (again) from the book Knitted lace of Estonia using a 4ply yarn by Posh Yarns (again - good recipes don't need changing :) ) in early November and I've finished it in a week . It's already  blocked and only needs the ends sewn in.
Then I've cast on for a green sock for my brother I've had in mind for years now, but somehow didn't felt like doing it. So started a hat for myself, since now my hair is so long that if i put it up, which i usually do when going outside, the bun is so big a normal size hat is just too small. I have a beret I've made some time ago but don't really like the dark purple colour so don't wear it really, but that one is perfect in size. So now i'm trying to make one like that in size and shape, but with a lovely merino-silk Posh Yarn (surprise, surprise...)
Actually I've spent the most of yesterday afternoon trying to write up a really really nice pattern with celtic style cables then this morning gave it all up so now I'm doing a basic 6-stitch cable pattern. I need a hat.

And now, some knitting

I have started a new knitting project today. Bought a nice skein from Posh Yarn a couple of weeks ago but was a bit disappointed by the colour – the result of that „all computer screens are different” thing. It is a nice colour, of course, just different from what I expected. Initially I choose a different pattern: Madli's shawl but without the nupps, and even cast on for that, but then changed my mind and did a tweak on the pattern, putting in cables. Drew up the chart this afternoon and cast on, originally for 3 cable columns which meant 88 stitches. Got till the sixth row on the first repeat when realized that it will be too wide, so I probably wouldn't have enough yarn for a proper length. Ripped back and started again with 2 columns and 68 stitches. I'm still not sure about it since the cables look a bit weird, so might have to spend tomorrow's knitting time with ripping back and doing it again. And again.
Or maybe I will get fed up with that and will finally get over with sewing up that blanket.

Last week

Wow what a week - lots of time off and only three days work :)

On easter monday, P buggered off to his island to see some family and friends, which meant i had the telly all for myself for the most of the day! Also i had no one to protest against turning the lounge into a crafts workshop.
I pulled out my beading tools and materials and in 5 hours, i had made a few things i was really happy with - as opposed with the last time when i tried this sort of crafting, and ended up with three earrings (pieces, not pairs). I made a bookmark and a keyring for P's mum, a keyring for my mum, and also a bracelet and two pairs of earrings for myself, and started another bracelet. At that point i started to run out of blue beads, so i was left with the charms only. Will continue when i have money to get some more supplies.

Tuesday, wednesday and thursday were workdays, so i could only work at the evenings on a small cross-stitch pattern for my cousin who just got her own flat (rented, not own).

Friday was spent in front of the telly again, of course, watching the wedding - i booked the time weeks ago and P still tried to protest until he gave up and went off to play pool. I was prepared for the day, too, here's how i started - toast, cup of tea and a commemorative sampler to stitch on. Around two at the afternoon i had my cousins over, tho K was so busy with her new phone (Samsung galaxy - very jealous) that she might as well not been there at all.

Saturday P was working, and he was sufficently grumpy about it. I had a much better day, i could actually spend some money to buy a few much needed clothes. I can't even remember when was the last time i bought new clothes. P got out of work at half past 4, and as i was still in the town, he asked me to start to walk towards his workplace so we'll meet up halfway. Wasn't a bad idea except half a street away from the football stadium the crowd started to come towards me - the game just finished... bad timing :)
In the evening we went down to Old Leigh which turned out to be more then "just 4 pubs" - there was a Tea Garden too, which i immediatly associated with Madame Puddyfoot's in the HP books, little antique shops and a couple galleries too. Aide of the best restaurant in Essex. We started at the Petersboat, but it was a bit too chilly plus no one was there, so we went to the Smack after one drink and luckily we did found some friends there, inside - in the family area, but no kids were around so it was ok. We left somewhat early as we (i) didn't wanted to spend much money. It was a good night but the money situation is still makes it hard to have a real night out, as it turned out on sunday morning when i assessed the damages and realized we had a bill to pay i didn't took into account, leaving us 40 pounds shorter then i expected. I was quite angry at myself - can't wait to have things sorted out finally and not having to worry that one bill will leave us in **** for a whole week or longer.
Had a lazy sunday afterwards, with pizza and some crafting. I tried out quilling - don't know why not "coiling", to sound more sophisticated or to make people confuse it with quilting. That happened at the craftshop were all i could find were two small books on quiling at the quilt and patchwork section, no papers or tools at all. So i ordered some on the internet, looked up instructions and pictures on the internet and in my craft magazines and started to coil. I quite like it, my problem could be that it is so small, but i like it that it needs some dexterity in each piece as opposed with the knitting or cross stitch were all stitch is the same.
I will make a card and/or box for the keyring and send them for my mum for her birthday.

Then i got up this morning, with the intent of finally writing something onto this blog, and as i usually do, checked the news.
Another day spent on BBC. It took them 9 years to train up those SEALs but finally they done it - bet w bush is gutted that it wasn't him who got Osama. Well we'll see the effects in the coming weeks, i hope it doesn't turn even worse.

Crafts & Crufts

I'm working on a simple cardigan while waiting for the next clue on the "In Dreams" shawl. Top-down, made in one piece, using Patons merino yarn. I think i'm becoming a merino addict :)
I wanted something simple and un-mess-up-able after the Central Park Hoodie, and i got what i wanted. It also became boooring after a couple days, so i've looked around what else could i do, and decided on this hardanger bookmark i got with my secret pal package. It's a kit, meaning that even a needle was included, so i didnt had the problem i often face of missing an important part or tool or have to measure out something. I actually finished the stitching in half a day, after i've got used to the different lenght of the stitches (being a cross-stitcher thats something i wasnt used to) it wasn't complicated. The good thing in embroidery is that it makes my left hand hurt - holding the fabric - as opposed to knitting where my right hand is the one that hurts - holding the needle - so even if i have a sore hand i can switch to the other craft.
P's x-box gave it up so he started to get really bored, but luckily this was his last lazy week as he starts at his new job tomorrow. I had two days off so i'm at the end of a four-day weekend, spent with lot of lazying around and watching telly. Documentaries in aboundance aand a dog-show :) It's a shame its only two hours each day, i could've watched them dogs all day. Finals coming up today :)

Wrap up - Öltözködjünk rétegesen

I've finished 3 projects in the last couple of days which made me sit down and just grin to the outside world and feeling contented. Ok so the third is still not totally finished but only coz i'm picky. So i had to start something new :) Gloves for boyfriend :)

Birthday presents - Szülinapi ajándékok

I dont know what's the costum in England but in Hungary we say birthdays are valid plus and minus 8 days from the real date - meaning birthday wishes and presents can be 8 days early or late and are considered being right on time. Well, seven days, but royalmail needed the last three :D
A "bigbottle" of Soak to wash all my handknits with it, and a pair of fancy rosewood needles, only 6 inches long, but hopefully i will use them to make scarfs this autumn as much as i use my symphony woods for shawls :)

30 blocks and counting - 30 négyzet, egyelőre

I'm currently knittting a patchwork bedcover, to use up all my acrilic yarns - i started this last year. Right now i'm using the most crappy ball ever, this is the third square i'm on and there's still plenty of yarn left. Brrr. Can't wait to have 60 square finished (i have between 25 and 30 right now) so i can make a smaller throw and move on to knit something really pretty from some really pretty yarn...

Why i don't blog - Amiért nem írok

I was working on this. Used up a 150g/475 m big roll of BFL yarn with about two meters left over. Its 212 cm long and 30 wide. Biiiggg. I wish i've made it wider though, and could've used some wires when blocked as the edges should be loopy - well i didn't had the amount of pins nor the patience to pin them in place at every row. As there's a loop at the beginning of each row. Next payday, maybe.

Ezen dolgoztam.

I was also working on these - top row middle and right plus bottom row left were done last saturday. Took about two hours each plus a few breaks (like lunch, brewing tea and stuff) and watched a stupid amount of documentaries on youtube. I run out of the interesting ones and also my head still spins a bit from the amount of information so now i'm off to snowboard videos. Much less brainy but the occasional rap and hip-hop as background music is annoying.

Yesterday i found an interview in german and was totally surprised how much i understood. The only word i had absolutely no clue of was Schulter. Looked up - it means shoulder. The etimology enthusiast in me was seriously dissappointed for not figuring this out :D But it's good to know that i still understand german and 10 years of learning wasn't entirely in vain :)

- csináltam egy pár hibát az áttört mintában, amiket későn vettem észre és már nem bontottam vissza, hogy kijavítsam;
- a karlyukaknál a szélső szem nagyon megnyúlt, csúnya :( ;
- a nyaka túl széles maradt, kellett volna még pér sor;

...

I finished it!! Sewed on all the buttons, darned in all ends, and it's 82 cm (32 inches) long. Used 700 gramms of yarn. Nice and warm. Of course i have some notes...

- i made some errors in the lace parts i didn't spot in time and didn't corrected later;
- at the armholes, the last stich is streched, looks ugly :( ;
- neck is too wide, should have carried on for a few more rows;
- it's great that it knits in one piece, but maybe a slit on the sides would be good (less bag-like)

...that's it. I'm picky i know, but dont want to make the same errors next time. I'll make new ones anyway ^_^

I'm very proud of it, even though i could have finished it in half the time if not for the sometimes week-long breaks....

Ta-daah: The pair of socks i made from the yarn i received from Italy. Ugly but yummy :) They're absolutly cosy and even goodlooking when worn, the ribbing makes them look a bit weird without feet :) I still have plenty of yarn as these are fairly short, maybe enough for a second pair...

And the big-big project, in process for three months now. Already doing the shoulder shaping, really not much left. I'm thinking about the button-problem now...

Megint csomag - Packet again

(I wrote this on saturday and even posted it but then took down as i wasnt satisfied wwith it. It's rewritten a bit now and bearable :)

It's really not good that i have more inclination to write when i'm melancholy then when i'm happy. Bad girl.

On friday morning i was running late - luckily as i was heading to the door (already 5 minutes late) the bell ring and i could take the package!! Yeay :)

But could not open it :( It was sitting behind the door all day 'till i came home, and i felt well enough only hours later to actually open it. And these waited for me patiently inside:

Lots of yarn - merino and alpaca and squashy wool and everything fine :) Plus a tin of cinnamon candies - goodness, they are spicy! i was surprised, i think i never tasted concentrated cinnamon before :D And a bagful of bonbons and little chocolates - another surprise, as Fiat is a car brand for me :D but they turned out very tasty a chocolte too. Thank you (not) secret (anymore) pal :)
Its all lovely, i just have the problem now to decide which yarn to use and for what project! I recently figured out what will i do with the baby merino from my first package - matching fingerless gloves for my mum and me - and i'm running out of ideas. Winter is long here but not really cold and if i make something even slightly too warm i just can't bear to wear it as it makes me feel like being in sauna, so i had to be smart (which is a rather hard thing from someone as silly as me) . I really have to learn lace as it will make things less toasty.
Ehh, this sounds like complaining but it is not - i'm very happy that i have to do this kind of thinking :)
And another thanks for my spoiler Typesetter for writing all the history and local pieces about the yarns - they all have a story, unlike those mainstream yarns anyone can get in any yarnshop. For example the big blue skeins are from a very old mill in Milano - which will close soon :( So, it really feels like a piece of history.

Now i'm going to finish the package for my spoilee, and then finish the socks - 10 cm of cuffs left - and then mum's vest - 6 inches left (aka eternity) - and then i will do lots of mitten and hat and scarf knitting.
With some sewing in the meantime, and i'd really like to do some spinning too - it's a lovely thing, the problem is i need lot of room and preparation, so all the fiber and the spindle are just laying around in the corner for weeks now :( I wish i could do all these in the same time - sometimes i just stand over my yarn stack, the sewing mashine and the fiber, plus some books, and just can not choose. I 'm so grateful that this is one of the biggest problems in my life :)

Amivel nem haladok... és a háttérben ami miatt ez van.
The thing not too well in progress... and in the background the culprit.

I made this before i bought the machine: completly hand-sewn. Tayloring is in my gene pool only problem is making straigth lines - i make just as 'good' lines as my mum did when ploughing: crooked ones :D (She was too short for the tractor so she looked out, then slid down in the chair, steered and used the pedals, then up again...)

I'm on holiday from yesterday till monday!! Ye-ye- yeahhh :) Still moving stuff between the two rooms, aaaand practicing with my brand new sewing machine :) I bought it on sunday.

I fund that all sewing machines - or at least the two i ever used - are pretty much the same. Only two main differences are: first, the position of the foot lever: this one has it under the bow, right hand side from the needle. Every other machine i know - including my granddad's/aunt's professional Singers - have it on their back, to be handled with left hand. So every time i had to lift the needle, i stroke the back of the machine with my left hand, than say grrr, and search for the lever with right hand...
The other thing is the reverse button which has to be kept pushed down. Weird.
Oh and that pattern selection dial is biggggg. Funny :) Makes it feel a bit toy-like :)
Also, my mum's sewing machine has a foot treadle, and i can't even drive, so i was a bit afraid from the speed pedal but it's going well. Only i have difficulty with choosing the speed...

I made this on sunday, and had no idea what the hell could i use it for. Now i figured it out: ironing board substitute :)

Fonoda - Spindling

Tv-sorozatok? csoki? Kábszer? Bah...
Ide nekem egy rokkát. Most.

Másik téma: megmutattam unokatesónak (L) a pénzérméimet.
...

(Pics tomorrow :) )
My learner spindle arrived today. After some delay - was out of stock and Nuzealandia is a long shipping away. Some nice people already wound up a piece of the yellow fiber onto the spindle to make it easier to start. Of course my first move was to break the fiber, so had to start with reattaching it - yeah.
So thats my first ever handspun, the yellow one. Its hilariously (or ridiculously?) overspun, full of bogs, absolutely uneven - as it should be. I'm so happy for it :)
The other one, the red, is the second try - already much smoother and even.

And now i understand all the knitters gone spinners out there; ok, i suspected it already, but this evening proved it. Forget drugs, or tv-shows, or chocolate. This stuff is addictive. I want a wheel. Now. So i can do this thing much faster and much longer. Yeehaa.

On other topic: i showed cousin L my coin collection - the ones from last year, whit the puzzle - coat-of-arms on them. He totally loved them, which surprised me. Usually i dont show people my hobbies/interests becouse they dont understand them. History? Heraldry?
I didnt thought he gives these a thing, and i was mistaken. Sometimes its good :)
Thats why i love this two cousins of mine: they actually use they brains and have a broad range of interests - even so they aren't highly intelligent, just ordinary people. Just like me :)

Lassan -Slowly

Most olyan lassanlassan haladok ezzel a zoknival. Mármint belassultam, mióta megvannak a sarkok.

...
The socks are now going very slowly-slowly. At least since turning the heels. Or is this because of the shortness of the weekday evenings?

I got today a pair of new (and strange) shoes on the post, plus a big book, hidden behind the doormat :) The usual postman trick, if the pack is too big for the drop but flat enough, they place it near the wall, covered whith the doormat. Clever :)

And im thinking of buying a learner set of drop spindle - oddly enough, i dont know the exact term for this in hungarian :) I think i will order it tomorrow morning, after my pay arrives on my account. I have the taxback payed onto the account but her majesty's treasury did not sent the money yet :P

Hajtépés helyett - Instead of pulling my hair

Reggel elkezdtem összevarni a tatyót.
Aztán nekiálltam a bélésnek.
Úgyhogy kb 2 órát vacakoltam a varrógéppel, cérnabefűzéssel, próbavarrással.
Úgyhogy most ebédelek, fél tizenkettőkor, mielőtt feldarabolom a bélésanyagot. Vagy a varrógépet.

Egyébként tényleg jó lenne varrni, olyan szép anyagokat láttam tegnap a méteráru boltban, mármint színeket!
